A Study on Activities of Nurse in a Hospital


Abstract
An activity study of nurses engaged in general teaching hospital in a metropolitan city was conducted during the period from Aug. 18 to 22, 1980.
The study population comprised of 67 nurses engaged in in-patient units of the medical
with sugical, ob-gynecology with pediatrics, and *scu, *mcu, nursery and delivery room. The analysis was made on the basis of individual daily performance time reported the nurse by themselves and computed primarily by the author. The following are the findings:
A. Activities performed : classified by type of nursing activity.
The patient-centered activity was found to be the major area (81.7%, 19.6 hrs.) of daily activity performed by nurse.
Unit-centered activity was found to follow next at 9.6% (2.3 hrs.) nurses spent 7.2% (1.7 hrs.) and 1.1% (15.2 min.) for other activity and personnel-centered activities respectively.
1) By nursing unit
A large difference in time distribution was noticed in ob-gynecology and pediatrics with patient-centered activity (88.3%, 21.2 hrs.) in delivery room with unit-centered activity (20.4%, 4.9 hrs.) and in department four (O.S,N.S) with other activity (10. 4%, 2.5 hrs.).
2) By shift.
The patient-centered activity appeared to be high during evening duty (83.5%0, 5. 8 hrs.) as compared to day duty and during day duty unit-centered activity (10.2%, 48.9 min.) was reported to be higher than evening and night duty.
3) By nursing personnel a large differences between the nursing personnel was noticed in patient-centered activity.
In patient-centered activity the staff nurse was found to be higher (89.1%, 7. 1 hrs.) than the charge nurse (84.0%, 6.7 hrs.).
The head nurse was found to be lowest (57.5%, 4. 6 hrs.).
In unit-centered activity (23.0%, 1.8 hrs.) was found high in head nurse. B. Activities performed : classified by level of skill.
The activities performed by level of skill were as follows: nursing activity 65.1% (15. 6 hrs.).
Administrative activity 9.4% (2.2 hrs.), clerical activity 8. 1% (1.9 hrs.), housekee¡þping activity 7.7% (1.8 hrs.), other activity 6.9% (1.7 hrs.), messenger activity 2.4% (33.9 min.), dietary activity 0.4% (6.1 min).
1) By nursing unit.
By time distribution, the administrative activity in department four (orthopedic and neuro-sugery) (12. 7%, 3. 1 hrs.) was higher as compared with other units. Nursing activity in department five (ob-gynecology and pediatrics) (71.0, 17.0 hrs.) was higher as compared with other unit.
Dietary activity in S.C.U. (1. 1%, 15.8 min.) was higher as compared with other units. Clerical activity in delivery room (12. 0%, 2.9 hrs.) was high and housekeeping activity in nursery (15. 2%, 3.6 hrs.). was high.
2) By shift.
The Administrative activity (11.0%, 52.8) was heavier in day duty, while clerical (9.9%) and other activity (7.8%) was heavier d ring evening and night duty than day duty.
3) By nursing personnel
The head nurse was spent the time in nursing activity (34.0%, 2.7 hrs.), in admini¡þstrative activity (17.3%, 83 min), and in clerical activity (16.1%, 77.3 min.) and in housekeeping activity (11.9%, 56.9 min.) were higher as compared with other personnel. The charge nurse was spent time in clerical activity (17.3%, 83 min.) which was higher than others.
The staff nurse in nursing activity (75.1%, 6.0 hrs.) was higher as compared with other personnel in day duty.
